Supporting Barnet to walk in God's footsteps
Congratulations on taking this important step towards baptism — whether for your child or for yourself. At SJB, we believe baptism is the beginning of a lifelong journey with Jesus Christ, and it is always a joy and privilege to welcome new members into the life of the Church. Baptism is a celebration of God’s love and grace, and a sign that we belong to Christ and to one another. Whether you are bringing a baby for baptism, exploring it as a family, or coming to it as an adult, you are warmly welcome. We rejoice with you as you begin this journey.

Baptism is the beginning of the Christian life — a joyful and powerful sacrament through which we are welcomed into the Church, joined to Jesus Christ, and sealed with the promise of new life. Whether received in infancy or adulthood, baptism is God’s gracious gift: a sign of love, a call to follow, and the start of a lifelong journey with Christ.
In baptism, four things happen. First, we are made members of the Church — not just this congregation, but the whole Body of Christ across time and space. Second, we dedicate our lives to God, turning towards Christ and beginning the daily work of living as his followers. Third, we receive the forgiveness of sins — past and present — washed in mercy and made new. Fourth, we are drawn into the life of the resurrection, called to live each day in hope, and to grow into the people God created us to be.
Baptism is also the beginning of a vocation: to be a disciple, to walk in the way of Christ, and to be a light in the world, to the glory of God the Father. At SJB, we rejoice to walk that journey with all who come to the waters of baptism.
We’re delighted that you’re thinking about baptism — whether for yourself or for your child. Baptism is a joyful step in faith, and at SJB we’re here to walk with you as you prepare for it. The first step is to contact the parish office with a few details. Please complete our Baptism Enquiry Form at the bottom of this page and we will contact you.
Fr. Sam will then be in touch to arrange baptism preparation. This usually involves one to three informal sessions, where we reflect together on the meaning of baptism, the shape of Christian faith, and how we can be ready to receive the joy and challenge this sacrament brings.
Baptisms usually take place in one of three ways:
At the 9.30am Sung Eucharist — especially for adults, so the wider church family can share the celebration.
At the 11.30am Family Service — particularly for children, surrounded by others at a similar stage of the journey.
Adults who wish to be baptised are asked to begin by coming along to worship regularly. We ask for a minimum of three months’ attendance before setting a date, so that baptism happens within the life of the Church, not apart from it.
Wherever you’re starting from, you are warmly welcome. We’re glad you’re here.

How many Godparents does a child need?
A child needs at least two Godparents, and ideally three. Godparents should themselves be baptised, as they are making promises of Christian faith on the child’s behalf.
Do parents need to be baptised for their child to be baptised?
No — parents don’t need to be baptised themselves. But if you’re not yet baptised, we warmly encourage you to consider being baptised alongside your child as part of a joyful family celebration.
Is there a cost for baptism?
No. Baptism is the gift of God’s grace, freely given to all. There is no charge.
Are there any legal requirements for baptism?
If a child is to be baptised, written consent is needed from everyone who has parental responsibility before a date can be set. Otherwise, baptism is a spiritual commitment and has no legal standing. It cannot be used for civil, immigration, or official purposes.
