Supporting Barnet to walk in God's footsteps
Grief doesn’t end on the day of the funeral. For many people, it’s only once the service is over and life becomes quiet again that the reality of loss begins to settle in. This can be a difficult and lonely time. At St John the Baptist, we understand that everyone experiences grief in their own way and at their own pace. There is no timetable for healing and no single path through sorrow. But no one should have to walk that path alone.
Our church exists to be a place of compassion, hope, and welcome for all who are hurting. Whether the funeral of your loved one took place here at SJB or somewhere else, you are always welcome with us. You may simply want someone to listen, a space where your loved one’s memory can be honoured, or the quiet reassurance of prayer. Whatever you need, we are here for you.
Fr Sam is available to talk with anyone who would find it helpful to share their thoughts, questions, or struggles following a bereavement. You don’t need to have the right words. You don’t need to be a regular churchgoer. You don’t need to know what you believe. You are welcome just as you are—whether you are feeling overwhelmed, numb, angry, confused, or searching for meaning and comfort.
Our church community is also here to offer care and companionship. Many people find support simply by being part of a gentle, understanding group—whether at a Sunday service, a weekday gathering, or over a quiet cup of tea. SJB isn’t just a building; it’s a family of people who care about one another and walk together through both joy and sorrow.
The church building is open during the week under the care of our vergers and provides a peaceful space for anyone who wishes to sit quietly, light a candle in remembrance, write a name in our prayer book, or simply take a moment to breathe. It’s a place where love and loss can be held honestly before God.
If you would like to talk, find support, or simply explore what might help you at this time, please get in touch. Fr Sam and the Parish Office can be contacted through our Contacts page for more information. You are not alone.
