SJB Barnet Church

Supporting Barnet to walk in God's footsteps

Introduction

A funeral is a sacred moment — a time to give thanks for a life, to grieve with hope, and to commend a loved one into the hands of God. At SJB, it is our deep honour to walk that journey with you.

We believe that every human life is precious, created by God and held in love beyond the bounds of death. In Jesus Christ, God entered fully into our humanity, including our suffering and mortality, and through his resurrection has opened the way to eternal life. The Christian funeral is not just a farewell, but a witness to that promise — a space of sorrow, love, memory, and trust in the God who raises the dead.

Funeral services can be held at SJB itself, in the beauty and stillness of the church building, or at a crematorium or graveside, depending on your needs and wishes. Each funeral is carefully prepared with the family, so that it reflects the life of the person who has died and offers comfort to those who mourn.

Whether or not you or your loved one are regular churchgoers, you are welcome. We are here to offer prayer, compassion, and hope in a time of deep significance.

Organising a Funeral

Most funerals at SJB — or those led by Fr. Sam at a crematorium or graveside — are arranged through a funeral director. If you know that you would like the funeral to take place at SJB, or for Fr. Sam to take the service, simply let your funeral director know. They will then contact the church office on your behalf to begin the process.

You are also very welcome to speak directly with Fr. Sam at any point — whether for practical help, spiritual support, or just someone to talk to during a difficult time.

Once contact has been made, Fr. Sam will arrange to meet with you to talk about your loved one, and to plan a service that honours their life and reflects your wishes. Every funeral includes a reading from scripture, a sermon, and prayers for your loved one and for those who mourn. You may also choose to include hymns or music (recorded or live), extra readings, or personal tributes.

Once the service has been planned, the details will be shared with the funeral director, who will ensure everything is coordinated on the day. Throughout the process, we are here to help you shape a funeral that is thoughtful, meaningful, and held in hope.

Funeral FAQ

What does it cost to hold a funeral at SJB?

Please speak to the parish office or your funeral director for full details. There is a statutory fee set by the Church of England, with optional extras such as music from the organist or choir, floral arrangements, or printed orders of service.

Do you offer interment of ashes?

Yes, we do. Please contact the office to discuss arrangements. Fr. Sam and the team consider it a deep honour to walk with families through this final step of the journey — a quiet, prayerful act of entrusting your loved one into God’s keeping.

Can we hold a memorial service at SJB?

Yes — we are always happy to host memorial services. These services have fewer formal requirements than funerals, which means they can be more flexible and personal in tone. Whether you’d like a reflective gathering or a large thanksgiving celebration, we’ll work with you to create a service that feels right for you and your family.

Is there support after the funeral?

Yes. You are never alone. Follow-up pastoral care is always available, and you are warmly welcome to continue connecting with the life and prayers of the church community.
