SJB Barnet Church

Supporting Barnet to walk in God's footsteps

Introduction

St John the Baptist boasts a fabulous three-manual instrument, originally made by William Hill & Son in 1884. After forty years of use, the organ was rebuilt by Frederick Rothwell in 1924, which saw the installation of some of our favourite stops, including the 16ft bombarde in the pedal division. A further forty years later N. P. Mander carried out work in 1967, converting all tubular-pneumatic actions to electro-pneumatic ’changeover machines’, and making tonal changes, similar to their work at St Paul’s Cathedral a few years later. In essence, N. P. Mander undid the tonal changes introduced by Rothwell. Noel Mander maintained the organ and rebuilt the organ in 1987 with a generous grant from the Hyde Foundation.

This book is a small collection of tributes from a few of the many people whose lives Terence Atkins has been a part of for the past 48 years or more.

It contains tributes from former vicars, choristers, adult choir members, choir parents and other people that you have worked with and stretches beyond SJB.
