Tower opening

The Tower of St John the Baptist was built in 1875 when Butterfield designed and built the expanded church which exists today. It's 96 feet (30 metres) high and from the top there are expansive views over London and Hertfordshire, extending on clear days to Kent and Essex. Things to look out for from the top of the Tower: the arch on the top of Wembly Stadium; Alexandra Palace; Canary Wharf; the Shard; the Queen Elizabeth Bridge at Dartford, the British Telecom Tower; Crystal Palace TV mast; the very top of the London Eye, and the tower of St Albans Abbey.  Barnet is the highest point on the old coaching route from London to York and the top of the Tower is about 460 feet (168 metres) above sea level. There isn't anything much higher between Barnet and the The Ural Mountains in Russia.
